Near as I can tell it goes away after a set percent of total treatment is done. It just weakens the pawn until it vanishes. Then I just manually order them to treat. The only time I haven't had doctoring done instantly was at night, when a doctor will not wake himself up to discover someone needs treatment. If a doctor has their doctoring at a high enough priority, they will be along shortly. The game will PING a medica alert that someone needs treatment. At that point, if the pawn is set to prioritize "bed rest" before anything else they will run off to a bed.
